The 2026 FIFA World Cup opens on June 11 at Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca, with co-host Mexico facing South Africa in a rematch of the 2010 edition’s opening fixture.

Kraken was named the Official Crypto Exchange Supporter of the FIFA World Cup 2026 on June 9, with tournament activations rolling out across 16 host cities in Mexico, Canada, and the United States starting June 10.

Crypto’s World Cup playbook

Chiliz, the blockchain platform behind fan tokens for clubs like FC Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, partnered with the South African Football Association (SAFA) to launch a fan token on May 21. That means South Africa’s national team, Bafana Bafana, now has a blockchain-powered engagement layer for its supporters heading into the tournament.

Fan tokens typically give holders voting rights on minor club decisions, access to exclusive content, and gamified rewards. Chiliz has been building this niche for years, and a World Cup stage is about as high-profile a proving ground as it gets.

Then there’s Avalanche. FIFA Collect, the organization’s digital collectibles platform, has migrated to the Avalanche-powered FIFA Blockchain. The platform has attracted over 85,000 addresses, giving Avalanche a direct pipeline to the kind of mainstream audience most Layer 1 chains can only dream about.

Prediction markets and the opening match

Crypto-native prediction markets are already pricing the opener. As of June 10, Mexico’s implied probability of winning sits around 69-70%, with a draw at 20-21% and a South Africa victory at just 10-11%.

Mexico enters as heavy favorites for good reason. They’re playing at home in the Azteca, one of the most intimidating venues in world football, at an altitude of over 2,200 meters. South Africa’s 2010 tournament, the one this opening fixture mirrors, saw them become the first host nation eliminated in the group stage.

What this means for investors

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has hinted at the potential launch of a FIFA-branded token. If that materializes, it would represent one of the largest traditional organizations in the world issuing its own digital asset.

Fan tokens have a mixed track record. Many launched during the 2021 bull run and subsequently lost 80-90% of their value.

For Chiliz specifically, the SAFA partnership and broader World Cup visibility could drive renewed interest in CHZ, its native token. The token powers the Socios.com ecosystem, which hosts fan tokens for over 100 sports organizations.

Avalanche’s play is more infrastructure-oriented. Hosting FIFA Collect positions AVAX as the default settlement layer for one of the world’s most recognizable brands. If FIFA expands its blockchain ambitions beyond collectibles into ticketing, credentialing, or even the rumored token, Avalanche would be the natural rails.

Kraken’s sponsorship is the most straightforward bet: brand awareness at massive scale. With US regulatory clarity still evolving and competition among exchanges intensifying, the World Cup gives Kraken a platform to reach casual fans across 16 host cities in North America.
