I Tried Every Finance App. None Gave Me the Full Picture.
A solo developer’s journey to building a complete personal finance app.
Shashikant B5 min read·Just now--
It was a random Tuesday night.
I sat down with a simple question:
“How much am I actually worth?”
Not salary. Not bank balance. My real financial position.
It should’ve taken 30 seconds.
Instead, it turned into this:
- Open banking app → check savings
- Open investment app → check mutual funds
- Open stock app → check portfolio
- Open loan app → check outstanding debt
- Open credit card app → check dues
- Open spreadsheet → track expenses
Six apps. Six logins. Endless switching.
And after all that?
I still didn’t have a clear answer.
That’s when it hit me:
Why is something so important… this fragmented?
The Problem No One Talks About
Most finance apps are built in isolation.
Each one solves one piece of the puzzle:
- Expense trackers → where your money went
- Investment apps → how your money grows
- Loan apps → what you owe
- Budget apps → what you planned
But your financial life isn’t one piece.
It’s the entire system.
Your net worth is: What you own minus what you owe — across everything.
Yet no app shows that complete picture.
So we do what everyone does:
- Jump between apps
- Take screenshots
- Maintain spreadsheets
- Guess our financial reality
And slowly… we lose clarity.
I Didn’t Plan to Build a Product
I didn’t start with a business idea.
I just wanted to fix my own problem.
The truth is — I wasn’t even a developer back then.
I tried everything I could find. Dashboard apps, finance tools, spreadsheets.
But every solution felt incomplete. Limited. Fragmented.
No matter what I used, I was still stitching pieces together.
That frustration pushed me to do something I never thought I would:
I decided to learn how to build it myself.
It was 2023. I knew nothing about mobile development.
I spent the next 3 months just learning Flutter and Dart.
Not building. Just understanding.
There were late nights. Frustrating errors. Moments I wanted to quit.
But every small win — a button that worked, a screen that loaded — kept me going.
I started learning Flutter and Dart — not because I loved coding, but because I needed a solution that didn’t exist.
So I began with a simple idea:
👉 One app. One place. Everything.
At first, it was just for me.
But when I shared it with a few friends, something unexpected happened.
They all said the same thing: “I thought I was the only one struggling with this.”
That’s when everything changed.
It stopped being a personal experiment.
It became a mission.
Nights, Weekends, and One Obsession
There was no team. No funding. No roadmap.
Just me, a laptop, and one obsession:
“Make personal finance finally make sense.”
I built it piece by piece:
- Income tracking
- Expense tracking
- Investments
- Loans
- Net worth
Then I kept going…
Because real life is more complex than that.
What FinMigo Became
What started as a tool… became a system.
FinMigo is not just another expense tracker.
It’s a complete financial command center.
A place where you can:
- Track income, expenses, investments, and loans
- See your true net worth in real time
- Create custom charts and analyze using AI
- Plan budgets and financial goals
- Run retirement simulations
- Manage subscriptions and recurring bills
- Store financial documents securely
- Analyze your entire financial behavior
And most importantly:
👉 See everything in one place
No switching. No guessing. No stitching data together.
The Feature I’m Most Proud Of
Most apps say “AI-powered.”
But there’s a hidden cost:
Your data leaves your device.
That didn’t sit right with me.
So I made a hard decision:
👉 Build AI that runs entirely on your device
No cloud processing. No data uploads.
That means:
- Your financial data stays private
- The app works offline
- Insights are faster
- No subscriptions just for AI
It was harder to build.
But some things are worth doing right.
Where Things Stand Today
Today, FinMigo is live in open beta on Android.
- It’s real
- It’s usable
- People are using it
- And improving it with feedback
Every day, I’m fixing bugs, adding features, refining the experience.
Not as a company.
But as a builder who genuinely cares.
Why I’m Sharing This
If you’ve ever:
- Felt lost about your finances
- Switched between multiple apps
- Wondered where your money actually stands
Then this is for you.
Because the problem wasn’t you.
It was the tools.
An Invitation
FinMigo is free during beta.
Try it.
Break it.
Tell me what’s wrong.
Tell me what’s missing.
Because this isn’t just my product.
It’s something I’m building with people like you.
One Simple Goal
At the end of the day, I’m trying to solve just one thing:
👉 Give people complete clarity over their financial life
Not partial views. Not scattered data. Not confusion.
Just clarity.
